Cnet, NBC To Offer High-Speed Internet Portal

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Online news publisher CNet Inc. and General Electric Co.'s NBC
television network said Tuesday they would create the first Internet portal service aimed at users with
high-speed modem connections.

The news comes just as high-speed, cable-based Internet service provider AtHome Corp. agreed to buy
Excite Inc. (Nasdaq:XCIT - news), a Web search engine and directory, for $6.7 billion. Together the announcements show
how competition is shaping up for next-generation Web offerings.

CNet and NBC will create a high-capacity version of their joint portal, Snap (www.snap.com), to be launched in the first
quarter of 1999.

Snap ''Cyclone,'' as the new version will be called, will be carried on high-speed services, including those of major local phone
carriers such as GTE and SBC Communications, as well as cable-modem service providers.

High-speed, or ''broadband'' Internet access can be achieved through cable or using asymmetrical digital subscriber line
(ADSL) that allows traditional phone wires to carry digital traffic at higher speeds.

Content on Snap Cyclone will include APB Online, which allows users to track police activity in several major cities, including
live audio and video feeds of police chases and emergency phone calls, program clips from the CNBC business news channel
and music videos from the Rolling Stone Network.

Do you think AWRE and WSTL are kind of "free-floating" just before their Q4 numbers are out?
