The scalable, price competitive server can be configured either asa tower or rackmount and is ideally suited to the Windows NT operating system clustering environments. The new model complements the VisionBase line, which includes the already-shipping, highly-configurable 4-way, VisionBase 8460. The VisionBase 8450's feature set and design makes it ideal for a multi-server clustering environment. When running Windows NT Server 4.0 Enterprise Edition, the VisionBase 8450 is optimized for Microsoft Cluster Server. With up to four 450MHz Pentium II Xeon processors, each with 512MB or 1 GB of second level cache, itsupports as much as 4GB of main memory and features seven 32-bit PCI slots. For enhanced fault tolerance and reliability, the VisionBase 8450,like all models in the VisionBase line, can be equipped with Hitachi PC's innovative Hitachi System Manager (HSM) software. HSMsoftware contains a predictive failure analysis component that will allow users, VARs or their support organizations to order repair components or dispatch a service technician even before a problem causes any 'hard' errors. Its remote diagnostic capabilityand pre-failure alert features also help lower total cost of ownership by minimizing downtime and reducing the need for on-siteIT support. "Customers are eager to host demanding Line of Business, database and OLTP solutions on Windows NT Server to capitalize on its advanced features and industry leading price performance," said Edmund Muth, enterprise marketing group manager at Microsoft Corp."Systems like the Hitachi VisionBase 8450, which can be used as a SMP solution or in clustered configurations, address the needs of customers needing performance and expandability."
