Traders (Market Makers,Daytraders,Buy-side Traders,...) use Instinet all the time to try and move a stock in the direction they want (to produce a "headfake"). Happens every day !! Also keep in mind that MM's are trying to get the best fill for their customers to keep them coming back.

Rick,
I couldn't agree with you more about market makers being in bed with other. I worked some time ago at what was the largest market maker in the country and knew exactly which market makers were as you say "in cahoots". Have not been an active trader in some time, but starting to dabble again.
Interesting article in this month's Worth magazine about NITE and how they only lost money three days in the last two years. That's about 500 trading days, no one is that lucky or that good. There is money to be made in trading but don't fool yourself into thinking that you can beat market makers at their own game, the deck is stacked against you.
Keep the thread going and good luck trading.
Ken

I do not think 10K units are used for headfakes. Just remember the little guy at times can move the market. So it does not take quantity, just timing.
