I have noticed that the MMs will push a stock down that has been flat for several months just before a big piece of positive news (look at the way they dropped XCIT several weeks ago as an example) and vice versa for bad news. Getting a little greedy I guess.

You can sometimes tell this is happening if you see small lots 100 to 400 shares moving the market in one direction and then a large (e.g. 10,000 share) lot comes in at the opposite side and only moves the market a little or not at all.

KFE,

Hey, thanks for the "insider info." Yep, it's kinda obvious when an ax is trying to sit on a price despite upticks everywhere else and all of a sudden MSCO drops in or NITE and gives his pal a hand. Lotta rough stuff going on and newbie traders need to be aware that the playing field is far from level.

I noticed a discussion of MM techniques using ECNs to headfake stocks. What ECNs are used? Obviously INCA sits on the average trading desk. What other ECNs are used by MMs? Is ISLD? BTRD?
