U.K. May Let Viagra Be Given to Some Publicly-Funded Patients

London, Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Pfizer Inc.'s blockbuster
impotence drug Viagra should be made available to limited numbers
of patients in Britain through the publicly funded National
Health Service, the U.K. Department of Health proposed, reversing
an earlier decision.

Frank Dobson, secretary of state for health, proposed that
the drug be prescribed from public funds to people with spinal-
cord injuries, prostate removals, multiple sclerosis and other
conditions that may render them sexually impotent. Others without
those conditions but suffering from ''severe distress'' may also
get the drug under ''exceptional circumstances,'' he said.

The proposal is the latest for dealing with concern that
patients seeking a remedy for impotence -- estimated to number 2
million in the U.K. -- may represent a huge burden on state
