Dell Secures Share of Number One Position in
Worldwide Personal Workstation Market

Also Rises to Number Two Position in Combined Market of UNIX and NT Systems

ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1999--Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:DELL - news), the
world's leading direct computer systems company, today announced that it has claimed a share of the lead in the personal
workstation market, entering into a ''virtual tie'' with Hewlett-Packard Company, according to preliminary estimates by
International Data Corporation (IDC)(1).

IDC's year-end analysis showed that Dell grew from zero personal workstation market share at the beginning of 1997 to a
leading position by year-end 1998. Personal workstations leverage the Microsoft® Windows NT® operating system and
Intel® processors rather than proprietary operating systems and processors. Dell also secured the number two position in total
worldwide workstation shipments, which includes systems based on both UNIX and Windows NT operating systems(1).
Competitors in this market include Sun Microsystems, IBM, Compaq and Silicon Graphics.

''Customers who demand exceptional performance at competitive price points have embraced the Dell Precision(tm)
WorkStation brand,'' said Michael S. Dell, chairman and CEO, Dell Computer Corporation. ''Dell's direct model is proving to
be the most efficient method for meeting the diverse price and performance needs of workstation users.''

''Dell has become a force to be reckoned with in the personal workstation market,'' said Tom Copeland, workstation analyst
at IDC. ''Dell's workstation market share grew at 186 percent, substantially more than the industry average of 36 percent, and
far more than any other vendor.''

Introduced in July 1997, the Dell Precision WorkStation is intended for professional users who demand exceptional
performance in the computer-aided design (CAD), geographic information systems (GIS), digital content creation (DCC),
computer animation, software development and financial analysis markets. Dell Precision WorkStations are designed to support
Windows® 2000 when available.

All of Dell's workstation products are dual-processor-capable, and the product family members consist of the Dell Precision
WorkStation 210 and 410, based on the Intel® Pentium® II processor, and the Dell Precision WorkStation 610, based on the
Intel Pentium II Xeon(tm) processor. A full list of prices and configurations for these systems can be found on the World Wide
Web at dell.com.

Ranked No. 125 among the Fortune 500 companies and No. 363 in the Fortune Global 500, Dell Computer Corporation is
the world's leading direct computer systems company, based on revenues of $16.8 billion for the past four quarters. Dell
designs, manufactures and customizes products and services to customer requirements and offers an extensive selection of
software and peripherals. Information on Dell and its products can be obtained through its toll-free number 800/388-8542 or
