Washington, Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Intel Corp. will be able to ship 600-megahertz microprocessors in the third quarter of this year, following an advance in chip manufacturing, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people familiar with the news to be released today. The new 0.18 micron manufacturing process will allow the creation of a 667-megahertz chip by the end of the year and an 800-megahertz chip by 2000, the newspaper said. Analysts told the Journal that the new chip-making technique would give Intel an advantage over its competitors, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and National Semiconductor Corp., who are three to six months behind Intel in the development of the technology.

Earlier this month, Intel unveiled three new versions of its Xeon microprocessor, a 450-megahertz chip aimed at powerful computer workstations and servers.
