Apartim: Actually couple of months ago I gave DELL's Investor Relations a piece of my mind for 'ignoring' the Indian market after seeing an article captioned 'Dilly Delling Around' or something from Dataquest (India),sent them a copy of the article as well. I didn't get a reply which I thought was unusual since I normally get a reply the same day I send them a message. Finally after 3 or 4 days I did get a reply in which they said something like.

-we are not ignoring India and just because we do not have plant there that doesn't mean we are ignoring the market. Said we serve the whole of North America (U.S,Canada,Mexico,South and Central America) from the U.S and that doesn't mean we are ignoring these markets. Then they went on about the recent plan to start the Brazilian plant and China and said we would be considering new plants in India and elsewhere as and when the time is right or something like that-

I think Dell is waiting for the Indian market to reach some sort of a critical mass in PC sales before opening up a plant there.I also think now that the sale of PCs are picking up momentum (+ 1 million units projected for 98 I think) they might do something within couple of years.

Thoug Dell sells PCs in India (Serves the country from Singapore)the dominant players now in the Indian markets are Compaq,HP,IBM,Wipro,Acer and Zenith besides the white box makers.

That is all I know.
