Well, I would not deny that some pro- lifers are over the top, nor that some politicians are cynical about the issue. But I believe that most pro- lifers are perfectly normal people who think that abortion strikes at the heart of morality, by striking at the most defenseless. The standard of viability is shifting, since medical technology has made it possible to incubate ever younger "premies", and it certainly doesn't take long before the fetus is recognizably a human child, albeit in a position of extreme dependency. Pro- lifers believe that abortion has led to such phenomena as the teen mothers who gave birth and left their children in the trash, and that such things are merely a symptom of a wider increase in callousness and irresponsibility.
