No I thought he spent all his time trying to squash the United Farm Workers Union. He couldn't do that so I doubt we can give him credit for the Soviet Union collapse. He lead my state and my country but I can't think of anything really constructive he achieved. Oh he had secret wars.

George, you make good points on Soviet decline, but you should add their debacle in Afghanistan, which like our Vietnam disenchanted the military's confidence and the populations' support of national leadership.

It also forced significant alienation of East Block countries whose populations had Islamic influence. Had the Soviet's mission there succeeded we might never have "won" the cold war so agreeably, as their winning would have bolstered Soviet influence and self-determination.
