I'd say that's a pretty bold assertion, for one not in a position to evaluate these claims.

A study of physics brings an understanding of many more areas than is apparent from the academic challenge. The most obvious problem with SDI is an assumption that the opponent won't change tactics in a way that negates the advantage of SDI at a much much cheaper cost. It is not necessary to use ballistic missles to destroy another country if that is the desire. It is also cheaper to send up thousands of dummy missles to disguise an attack.

More research into space exploration will lead to military spin-offs with some positive return the country for it's efforts.
