Its neighbors are especially vulnerable, particularly Argentina. An increasingly likely recession in Latin America's largest economy could also chop regional economic growth.

What people may be missing, or failing to understand, is that one of the elements in the underpinning of these nations' economies didn't just fall out of the sky.

Governments, merchants, private individuals and organisations worked diligently, and not always without risk, to ensure the development and advancement of the agriculture industry in both the Andean and Southern Cone regions of South America. So much time and so many resources had been wasted in prior decades that it took a major effort to make that sector thrive as it should.

Many economists have reported at length on how productive agriculture can benefit developing economies. Revenues from the sale of farm goods and by-products contribute to the nation's current account, but a thriving farm economy has sociological impact as well.

This decades-long restoration and expansion in farming and farm markets required both domestic and international investment. And some who invested were rewarded handsomely. But, if product pricing does not improve and income is not supported through good currency regimen, a valuable South American resource may wither on the vine and cause more damage than some might expect.

More to the topic, China's recent re-emphasis in this area has more than just a societal dimension.
