I think they just wait for the next stockholders meeting, put it to a vote and get authorization to increase the shares and split. Splits are just more work for those of us that track our long term holdings in Excel!

What does Warren think about splits, eh? 8)

To expand on Brad's explanation, this is why the last split date was
in May after the April shareholder meeting. Expect the IBM Board to
vote on a split next week, Gerstner announce it along with a few words
about the positive developments in the first half, state that it gets
voted on by the shareholders in April with a May split date. This is
exactly what happened two years ago.
