B&N yes of course. The two problems with them are 1) to my knowledge they are not using books as a catalyst to propel themselves into mass retailing and 2) they are not a technology company whereas Amzn is imo.

For a number of reasons I dont think any traditional retailer is going to be able to transform themselves into an online distribution machine. The only traditional company that has memorably made a mark on their technology implementation that I can think of is UPS. Everybody else fails miserably.

BTW onsale (which holds inventory) was founded as a software company whos charter was to sell bidding software to those companies that wanted to liquidate inventory over the web. Thats an easier transition. Maybe some of these dead technology companies like Sybase should focus on a mkt segment and go into retailing, who knows they might be successful.
