Jim: yes..most mutual funds can be margined. I think the big impact last fall was that many "small" investors loaded up on high-yield bonds and smallcaps at the same time...and it seemed like the market was manipulated to cause both sectors to implode at the same time.
So LTCM and anyone on margin were hit at the same time.
I don't think we heard the truth about the LTCM debacle..there's.no way that default of Russian debt caused that. What positions are they trying to unwind? I'd love to know...
A lot of posters on SI have vanished in the last six months...newbies have showed up...but I see a huge turnover on the threads. The market finds a home for all unwanted money. -g-

I think in Datek, you cannot buy mutual fund on margin, but you can use the mutual fund in your account as collectible to buy another marginable stock.
