Like you I was once a kind, caring, compassionate, dedicated Democrat. I worked for the McGovern campaign, and I still proudly show the picture of when I got to meet him. Where did we go wrong?

Heard a saying once, thought that there was more than a grain of truth in it: "If you're not a socialist at age 20, you don't have a heart. If you're not a capitalist at age 30, you don't have a brain."

I worked for the Eugene McCarthy campaign in '68 in several states. Was at campaign HQ in California the night of the primary when RFK was shot. A bit of my youthful innocence died that night.

I suppose it was a combination of things ranging from cynicism to success. In the 70s, I noticed that every democrat senator was a millionaire, most having achieved that distinction while in office. The hypocrisy of their rhetoric changed several of us forever.
