Great post. If you're only half right we are all going to celebrate.

I see the difference between '97 and '98 as follows:

4Q '97 - Japan was in the equation + higher Average Selling Prices
4Q '98 - This year the digital camera market has been discovered.
There are many more design-ins

I can not imagine how we can end up with the same earnings per share (.09/.10) as the 3rd quarter of '98 with the sales increases we've heard of during the 4th quarter IMHO.

Good luck - I'll wave to you all as we pass 40!

Tim

Yesterday I went shopping at the West Palm Beach FL BEST BUY. Of course, I immediately went to the digital camera department looking for SanDisk CF cards and found none available. When questioning the sales consultant I was told they were all(8 MB, 16 MB, 48MB) on back-order expecting to receive them in about 2 weeks. All of the Kodak Digital cameras offered were also on B/O for at least 2 weeks more.

Keep in mind that this is almost the end of January, and the Xmas rush has been over for a while now. This means the heavy demand is continuing. I wonder how backlogged SanDisk is?

Who is/are Gemplus, and are they a factor to consider? I don't recall any discussion of them here.

Gemplus briefly mentioned in paragraph after subtitle "EUROPEANS LEAD IN...SMART CARDS"

Still long SNDK,

AUS: Your post seems to be right-on to me. You definitely have a grip on SNDK from many perspectives.

Re: ", SNDK is best at inventing, researching and developing cutting edge flash memory products"

I too have been concerned about their original plan to manufacture their own product. If they sold their manufacturing means and lived on royalties alone, their balance sheet would look much better.

To my thinking, they should post at least .15 monday night and it could certainly be more. The first quarter '99 should be better because of higher profit margins on a more diverse line of products, because of increasing royalties and because of that royalty spillover from prior quarters (of unknown amount). I don't know what the 4th Q has to be to make the stock continue rising in the short term. A .15 posting might cause a "sell on good news" kind of thing or it could cause a "confirmation of good things to come" mood. You would think that .32 would make the stock rocket upward, but I'll never forget what happened in October '97 when they had a blow-out report but the stock tanked on comments by Eli. So I can't determine what will happen, but I am long on the stock regardless.

The patent issue is extremely important to us. This Lexar has no basis. The Samsung suit concerned some very fundamental patents and the result confirmed to all the competing companies that the patents were strong and valid. At this point, they all caved in and we were off to the races. This is the fundamental strength of the company. The only way they can screw it up is to get too mixed up with trying to make money on their own product lines.

Thread,

Needed to amend my post. I actually tried to repost this morning, but for some reasons the edited segments are no longer there.

This should have been in italics as it is copied directly from the Q4 report...

The timing and amount of these payments can vary substantially from quarter to quarter, depending of the terms of each agreement and, in some cases, the timing of sales of products by the other parties. As a result, license and royalty revenues have fluctuated significantly in the past and are likely to continue to fluctuate in the future. Given the relatively high gross margins associated with license and royalty revenues, gross margins and net income are likely to fluctuate more with changes in license and royalty revenues that with chages in product revenues.

Also, please recall that 1997 Q4 was taxed at a much lower rate than the subsequent quarters of 1998. If revenues remain comparable to Christmas one year ago my estimate should be revised to $0.19 (fully diluted) based on a 36% taxation rate. I still believe that $0.19 is a moderately conservative estimate.

Sorry for the miscalculations.
