ALA is a large holding company doing everything from aerospace to military hardware to telecommunications. They have ATM data switches, etc., etc. Ciena is one of the few players in the DWDM industry.

DWDM simply put, is the division of light transmitted through fiber into different colors so that each color can carry a separate phone call or data. That allows a fiber connection to effectively become many connections, currently running 64, as I remember. So DWDM is important to the telecommunications on the ground to make fiber work better.

Since ALA is a big holding company, it has many activities going on at one time. DBSS is most likely dealing with the aerospace side of the house and is not effected by this discussion with Ciena.

I owned Ciena last year for a short time. Rode it from $35 to $40ish and left. The stock ran to the $90's and then fell to the mid teens after they had a deal (TelLabs as I recall) and it fell through. Ciena at this point only has a few customers and it is subject to market swings if one of them decides to hold orders which also happened to them last year (T as I recall).

It is a good piece of technology. One that will be more important as data communication speeds and bandwidth increase into the use of fiber. But again, IMHO, no effect on DBSS positive or negative.

DBSS does not fit in with Ciena at all. One (CIENA), provides high speed terrestrial transmission of high volume data via fiber optic lines. The other deals with wireless, low volume, data collected from geographically dispersed radio transmitters via satellite.

DBSS is licensed to use Low Earth Orbiting birds. When deployed in small number (DBSS plans to launch 6)they excel in the receipt and re-transmission of small data packets for non real-time applications (assume you only needed to "read" the transmitter every 90 minutes at most). When deployed in large number they (see Iridium, etc.)can be used for personal communications.

DBSS has special, miniature, low cost, radios and technology that will enable them to use LEO's for their GEMS system. That is one that reads utility meters. Place a small radio in the meter (especially one in a hard to read location) let it transmit the usage results. DITTO for environmental sensors, asset tracking (where are trucks, boats, people, equipment, etc.?), vending machine status, etc. Darn near unlimited applications for "picking up" data via satellite and delivering it to a Client. A terrific form of data service utility is emerging. DBSS is well positioned, they just need funding to launch and a partner with enough marketing muscle to quickly establish an initial market presence.
