Catcher, The last time they split back in Feb98, the stock was only
in the 130s. They announced it stating that they want it to be
affordable to small investors( or something like that). The other
thing I remember is that they were very cautious in their Jan98
earnings release (Yea I know they always do this---back then it
emphasized more).

Now I am again thinking that if the stock price is the main factor
in a stock split---we could get one very soon.
You are right, MSFT trading at 200 seems odd---it also seems odd to
trade at 160, 170, 180. Maybe the price is the only reason to split.

The difference between last year and this year was that last year
the stock was actually down from the start of its fiscal year in
July 97( or flat--i can't remember). However, this year there has
already been a gain of at least 80 % since start of July 98

The question remains does a stock split get announced based upon
the stock price or is it some other factors at work (like above)?
I wish i knew!!

The only reason we see a stock split is because the price , otherwise , we will see Microsoft split at $40, or Csco split at $76. Microsoft sure will announce a split pretty soon, but the stock may pass the $200 line before the real split does take place.
