Hi Mo

Here is some of which appears in IBD today:

Looks like Intel lost market share in microprocessors. Went from approx 86% in 97 to 80% in 98. Reason: AMD and Cyrix emphasized the sub $1000 PCs.

Intel now positioning their new Celeron chips in the mobile PC Market
in an effort to: prevent loss of market share in that area which is viewed to be under similar pricing pressure, and to actual increase market share.

In addition, Intel is expected to introduce new versions of its higher -end Pentium chips for mobile systems.

The thinking expressed is the new Intel chips will boost sale of portables, the machines will be more powerful and come in a wider variety of shapes and sizes.

Intel's new Celerons for portable will feature additional "cache" memory- the "quick-access" memory between the main chip and the main memory. The earlier versions lacked the desired amount of "cache".

Intel in 98 divided its product line into three parts. High end was its Xeon chips. Middle level were Pentuim II and "some Pentuims",
the lower end included Celeron and older version of Pentuims.

Features that the new Celerons will afford is increased power, speed, cache and lighter less bulky portables. The chips will enable screen size to go bigger than the 12 inch current threshold.

Portables in the past held their price better than the desktop PC but now this price decline is more in line with that of the desktop. Reason for this is attributed to AMD,Cyrix inroads.
Compaq contract with AMD was a source of concern. Compaq's best selling desktop PC is a Presario- powered by an AMD K6.

The portables market is up for grabs.
