Despite Low orbit satellites likely winning potential, Cable and adsl, especially cable, could be a long term(about 20+ years) solution. There will be awful lot you can squeeze into a cable line. Internet access is only one of a dozen applications. Think about Digital video on demand. Cable Telephony. Data multicasting. Just about every application that is done separately on different medium can be combined to cable access. AT&T is not dummy to buy TCI. It will be very expensive to do all that with low orbit satellite systems. So cable's lifespan could be very long, about 20+ years before anything else happens. I must emphasize that cable is cheap and powerful as compared with low-orbit satellite systems.
