TigerPaw,

The invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet
Union on Christmas Day 1979, caught every
body off guard. I still remember picking
up the Los Angeles Times and looking at
the front page...a photo of Russian Troops
standing on the runway of the International
Airport in Kabul.

I still think Jimmy Carter gets a bum rap
for being "weak". It is a known fact that
his defense spending appropriations were
greater than that of Candidate Ronald Reagan.
Furthermore, some of these so called "smart"
weapons that all the Liberals gush so much
about these days...they were built by the
defense industry with Jimmy Carter as the
President. I'll list a few right here: The
F-117 "stealth" fighter, the Tomahawk cruise
missle, the B-1B bomber, F-18 Hornet, the
Maverick Missle, the M-1A1 Abrams Tank. Note
that all of these weapons were used heavily
during the Gulf War. Even the Space Shuttle
was built during the Carter Administration.
I know that the media painted a picture of
these weapons being a product of the Reagan
Administration but this simply isn't even
true. Jimmy Carter even brought back the
"draft", or selective service registration.

Jimmy Carter was faced with the horrible task
of trying to confront the Soviet Union with
a military that was not up to the task. When
he tried to rescue the hostages in Iran the
mission failed because our capability had
simply been reduced to the point where the
helicopters were breaking down...the mission
was doomed. Compare that with Bill Clinton's
mission to capture Somali warlord Adid. Even
though Clinton had probably the best military
that had ever been created for this job, he
simply sent in a bunch of underarmed, ill-
equiped Army Rangers to do the job. The
result was 18 dead Rangers, 100 wounded, and
1,000 dead Somalis. For some reason, the
media never held Clinton responsible for
this disasterous mission---and it was Bill
Clinton's idea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
