No need to answer since MSFT won't do it. Can't see them forfeiting the 100's of millions of legacy PC's.

Good point. Wouldn't you love to be a fly on the wall over at the Intel or AMD executive offices today?

Are you sure? Have you tried Office 2000 beta ? Microsoft
is moving in this direction and they would love to have
this feature.

On the other hand, there is many other ways to accomplish
this today. So this CPU ID would be a helpful alternative
for developers to utilize but I would agree with you that
it would never be a 'you must have it' requirement(at least
within the coming 5 years).

FYI, there is a software equivalent of this in Windows NT
today(which I believe would be in Windows 2000 too).
