The only explanation I have with today's sell-off:

Reaction to Intel's Friday announcement.

Vincenzo, I don't think Compaq is using any 3D chip from NeoMagic -- it's the 256-bit, NM2200 chip with 2.5 MB of embedded memory. Compaq likes to talk about Direct3D even with models that have 2D graphics.

I checked major US notebook manufacturers (IBM, Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP), and it appears that almost all models with the new Intel processors are using a NeoMagic accelerator, with most of them using the 256-bit 2200 chip and several using NeoMagic's PCI audio too (for example, Dell's Latitude CPi). An exception is Compaq, who still doesn't use any NeoMagic chips in its Armada line of business notebooks.

Do you think core logic with integrated graphics could be a threat to NMGC? See the link below to a message I posted earlier.

ATI's RAGE(TM) LT PRO mobile graphics accelerator selected by Compaq for new notebook PC line for the corpor
ate mass-market

ATI now supplies the graphics to eight of the world's top 10
notebook OEMs
------------------------------------------------------------

TORONTO, Jan. 25 /CNW/ - ATI Technologies Inc. (TSE:ATY; NASDAQ:ATYTF)
today announced that the RAGE(TM) LT PRO mobile accelerator will bring
no-compromise 2D, 3D and video acceleration to the new Compaq Armada 1750
series of popularly priced, but full-featured notebook PCs.
The RAGE LT PRO is a perfect match for the new notebook PCs, meeting the
needs of demanding corporate users for the latest in graphics and multimedia
applications, including support for DVD drives. This is the second design win
for ATI with the Compaq line of corporate user notebook PCs.
The RAGE LT PRO is ideal for use with Intel's Mobile Pentium II
processors (300/333/366 MHz) which are powering Compaq's new Armada 1750
series of notebooks. Reflecting the increasing on-the-road computing and
communications needs of corporate users, the new Armada series is equipped
with the latest in RAGE LT PRO supported advanced functionality, including
optional DVD.
With this most recent design win, ATI continues to strengthen its fast
growing presence in the mobile graphics market. From a position of essentially
no presence in 1997, ATI has advanced to hold the Number 1 position in the
swiftly expanding 3D segment in mobile computing, and has quickly advanced to
the number four position in the overall notebook market for 1998. ATI's RAGE
LT PRO now powers the graphics of notebooks made by eight of the world's top
10 notebook computer manufacturers.
''Compaq's decision to use ATI's RAGE LT PRO for its Armada 1750 series
of mass-market corporate notebooks is clear indication that high-performance
3D graphics are migrating to the mainstream notebook segment, as anticipated
by ATI,'' said Vincent Win, Vice President, Strategic Sales and Business
Development, ATI Technologies Inc. ''RAGE LT PRO is the performance leader in
the mobile segment and ATI's success in the notebook graphics market is
attributed to the RAGE LT PRO's unique combination of outstanding performance
and great mobile characteristics.''
