So, in other words, they feel that they just have to win? Gee, what an idea.

Borzou, thanks for the article. I agree that a lot of the reason that they are hanging in there has to do with the fact that they are trying not to show just caved in. Their leadership did not consider an exit strategy soon enough and it has just gotten worse and worse for them as their vendetta has become more and more obvious to everyone.

I never saw such a prosecution where they try at each and every opportunity to out maneuver the defense and limit their ability to make a defense. It is a despicable attempt to destroy the man at any cost at all, even if it destroys the party, the relationship between the branches of government, among other things. It degrades political discourse and what will be considered acceptable tactics in the future. All along the way, they have sought to damage Clinton if they could not convict him. If they can't impeach him, they want to at least humiliate him. Now they want witnesses in the hope that he will be embarrassed and damaged even more than he has been. It is just like their quick release of the Starr report without letting the defense even look at it first. They just had to get all the dirty details out in the public, even if they had no relevance.

I don't agree that the voters will forgive them soon.

Polls show that Clinton has strong support from about 30 percent of Americans, while 30
percent want him out and 40 percent are somewhere in the middle.

Faucheaux predicted that the center section will not feel strongl enough about the trial
either way to penalize Republican politicians in the 2000 elections unless Democrats
really seek to make an issue of it.

"That requires a defense of Clinton," he said, adding: "They may not want to do that."

And THAT is where a very loooooong Senate trial can turn out to be HUGELY beneficial to the Democrats. They can point out to the "middle" 40% of Americans that the Republicans wasted their majority status in Congress by indulging in a "hunting game" for nearly two years. And they can do it without ever having to mention Clinton's name, let alone defend him...
