Greg,
It's not just EMC. Take a look at companies like EMLX or QLGC. Admittedly small, niche companies, but doing quite well thank you both stock price wise and fundamentally, focussed on FC. ADPT saying that FC is a non issue is a little self serving, since the markets they serve are in direct competition with it. However, my guess from my recent reading about the issue is that that companies that execute well and stay focussed on either SCSI or FC will do well, at least in the near term. Somehow, I expect advancing technology will obsolete both eventually, not clear when. But not in the next couple of years.

I don't have any personal knowledge but my judgement and thus my opinion gives more weight to what Michael C. Ruettgers says than your opinion. He doen't agree with you and I like Mike.

Contrary to your view; Fibre Channel is very HOT and getting more critical in many systems. All the large UNIX vendors are rolling out some sort of fibre to improve performance and increase throughput. However, in order to maximize the performance of the system one must have fibre throughout the entire system... if the connectivity between disks and the machine does not use fibre then this becomes the slowest component of the entire system; in short the system's capability is only as fast as the slowest component.

I am a consultant implementing very large systems; one of my clients have 4 HP 2250's (HP's 64-bit V class machine) with fibre throughout - with the EMC Symmetrics connected the system screams. With Nike, MTIC or an EMC EOS the performance is less then optimal; our clients desire the fastest throughput possible and required fibre throughout. Yes, we do have MTIC drives but we use these drives as a cheap source of storage and not so much as high speed OLTP applications.

Another client has SUN equipment (6500, 5500 and several 450 servers) and they are connected to several EMC symmetrics which yields excellant performance; these too are using fibre. My point to you is that FC is more the norm then the exception; if you want the BEST running system you are going to require FC to maximize throughput; if you want to justify that FC is a 'non-issue' go right ahead but obviously you do not work with large scale mission critical systems.
