I went to the baseball writer's dinner in St. Louis last night. What an event. Mark McGwire was the Man of the Year and, of course, his appearance assured a full house of over 2,000 people. Other honorees were Joe Torre, Bob Gibson, Lou Brock and several current Cardinal players and other local sports figures.

One of the honorees, who will remain nameless, stated how thrilled he was to be given an award in St. Louis since he always followed the Cardinals, having grown up a couple of hours south in Peoria, Illinois. Hope he made it home OK.

They auctioned off the original program cover artwork, personally signed by McGwire, for a measly $11,000. The winning bidder was the guy who sold the 70th home run ball for $2.7 million. Really.

I'm tired today, but the fun last night was worth it.
