Any deal is going to depend on Intellectual Property-
CIEN's position is going to be undermined if they do not have important IP and/or if "competing technology" such as Silk Road displaces DWDM. Their best negotiation position is right now with their market share and everyone else's "time to market" problems. I think a deal will be done with CSCO and soon if the IP is really good. A bidding war as you outlined can really drive the deal up in the $40 range where Management would have a fiduciary duty to the shareholders to make a deal. Does anyone have an analysis on their IP?

Thank you for your analysis, John. I have mixed emotions about your conclusion, but have watched/invested in CIEN just like you. However, I think you did a superb job in looking at this from the perspective of the competition in a business acquisition.

However, may I respectfully point out what you probably already know: emotion is the road to personal success. Logic is the road to investment success. Reverse them, and disaster is guaranteed.

You have been very logical in your discussion thread. Can you distill it further to unwind the emotion of owning a large CIEN position?

I want to thank you for your superb post.

Best regards,

Mark A. Peterson

Staying in the basics of this company's business-selling more of the stuff, making the business grow--minding the business--that's what i heard management say after the debut with the crazies... seem to be walking that walk/not preoccupied with any kind of hype-they are over that. CIEN will grow.

The deal:

No merger will happen until April at the earliest. However, patience will be rewarded.

See you then.
