Who composes their VW do you know? Ideally, you would want the publishers and shipping hubs + any B&N owned distribution centers. The technology would then take the order and evaluate the cheapest source based on some criterion.

I honestly dont think anybody is managing transportation costs right now (shipping etc). B&N might have a VM with their suppliers + their own distr. centers though, thats one heads up for them. Otoh, if they have too many distribution centers to support their millions of stores, thats not good either - we saw that with Dell, these retail outlets are a boat anchor - too much inventory everywhere in your system.
