Steve here's some info. BTW ATHM is in the backbone business (building nodes and network) so local cable can connect to something as fast as they are. As you well know the limiting factor isn't always your connection to the network, rather the node and it's connection to the network. In many way's Asian and European cities should be much less expensive to wire than the USA. With the exploding growth of I-Net certianly Cable should be getting more attention (ATHM 61X book and 250X sales is getting attention) Copyright 1999 AFP-Extel News Limited AFX News January 19, 1999, Tuesday SECTION: Company News; Mergers and Acquisitions LENGTH: 308 words HEADLINE: United Intl Holdings unit UPC buys NUON stake in Telekabel for 550 mln nfl BODY: AMSTERDAM (AFX) - United International Holdings Inc unit United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) acquired the 49 pct stake owned by energy company NUON NV in Telekabel Holding NV for 550 mln nfl, NUON said. UPC supervisory board member Tim Bryan said NUON will receive half of the proceeds from the sale in cash and the other half in shares upon completion of the introduction of UPC shares onto the Amsterdam exchange, likely by the end of February. NUON will make a book profit of 275 ml nfl on the sale. It will remain UPC's preferred supplier, meaning that it can sell utility services via UPC's cable network throughout Europe. NUON will hold a less than 10 pct interest in UPC after it becomes listed, NUON chairman Tob Swelheim said, adding that it is likely to dispose of this stake as soon as possible afterwards, and UPC will have the first right to buy. As a result of the acquisition, UPC's stake in Amsterdam cable company A2000 will increase to 50 pct. UPC's Bryan also said that UPC plans to order several hundred thousand set top boxes for its European cable subscribers, with Royal Philips Electronics NV named as a likely candidate for this order, to be placed starting this autumn. Bryan noted that Philips and UPC have always had close ties, "for a start, considering the fact that UPC acquired a considerable amount of Philips' cabling interests" in the past. Siemens AG and General Instrument Corp were also named as possible candidates for the order, with Bryan noting that due to the size of the order, there is an increased chance the set top boxes will be ordered from several parties. ls LANGUAGE: ENGLISH LOAD-DATE: January 20, 1999
