As per the CFO on CNBC AltaVista is going to be a partial IPO and CPQ will retain some of AltaVista but still no mention regarding any spinoff to current CPQ shareholders. Rather frustrating if you ask me.

Loki,
Not too shabby on the earnings. Hope you have a pile of shares.

I think El is on the golf course, which should bode well for Compaq today. Jimbo is no where to be seen.

When I first heard the AV story, it appeared to be a total spin off from Compaq. In that case, the stock holders should be issued the shares rather then a public IPO. CPQ is not a cash poor organization raising funds to save the company. If that was the case, a public IPO would be in the best interest of stock holders.

Now it appears AV is a partial IPO to raise capital for AV and retain major ownership for Compaq share holders. That is different. I see the strategy more clearly now. Compaq is financing AV with stock rather then Compaq money. The people who buy the AV stock should do well. Compaq share holders will share the fortunes. Bottom line, it is a smart move.

Loki, I would have voted with my feet. <g>

COmparing the difference to both Dell and Q497 CPQ actually looks worse than a year ago on all major metrics.

...................CPQQ498..CPQQ497...DELLQ398...DELLQ397
A/R % of Rev.......64.......39........45.........42
Ret. on Inv. Cap. 13.8.....18.8......190........178
(Income taxed at 30%)
Ret. on Assets 17.9.....22.2......23.8......28.3
Shares INCREASED 10% for CPQ
Shares DECREASED 4.2% for DELL

Soon it will be apparent in its stock price how far this company is from dell...

EPS was actually DOWN from Q497 if taxed at stable 30% (tax rate in Q497)...So revenues went up about 50% and EPS was down...Hmmm...

Makes you see why it mentioned all about revenues in the press release and failed to mention the temporary 18.7% tax rate.
