Paul,

My fear is that Novell my only be experimenting with ZENs that play on the e-commerce fringe and might be afraid to step whole-heartedly into this space. John Slitz was asked this question directly during the last day of the Partner's Summit (paraphrased question was: "will Novell begin to focus on the E-Commerce arena?"). I was a bit nervous about the answer. He responded by saying that their primary focus is on Network Infrastructure products and services then E-Commerce when the time is right (I paraphrased his answer too).

I think Novell might be soo much on the "We must stay focused" bandwagon that they might miss perfect timing opportunities in the E-Commerce and Internet Services space.

One idea might be that Novell consider spinning off a division or company that can focus on how Novell Technologies can be used and promoted in the Internet Space and for E-Commerce. This would allow Novell's Netowrk Infrastructure focus to be maintained and also allows Novell to put equal focus on the HUGE opportunities in the E-Commerce and Internet arena. "Digital ME" would be only of the first offerings that would move to this new group.

It also develops a strategy within Novell to further diversify its revenue streams. Novell's focus is commendable in bring Novell back from the brink of oblivion but now they must diversify and enter into other arena's. The best model is to create off-chute companies or divisions that can allow core Novell to maintain focus while not missing the opportunties that must be grabbed now.

They should practice what they preach - "Internet Speed" means NOW Novell! Not when Microsoft, IBM, and Netscape finally have the ability or desire to do it. Netscape is already moving very fast on wanting to take this space that Digital Me is heading. Time is running short.

At least in a couple weeks or months from now when "Digital Me" catches on and the press finally runs with it, we can have proof that says "Been there - Done that". LOL
