No, I seriously doubt he is a "lying trickster." I think he's got a lot of integrity. He abided by his own proposed campaign finance reform law (cosponsored by Arizona Republican John McCain but ultimately murdered by the G.O.P.) by adhering to campaign fund restrictions. The Republicans outspent him like 10-1 in November. And he still won. I don't think the GOP types here have fully realized what a "no-good liberal whore commie" they bagged. He's a rather liberal Democrat, not exactly in keeping with Bill & Co.'s New Democrat mold. Check out his politics at vote-smart.org . Planned Parenthood gave him a 100 while the anti-choice wackos gave him a 7. The AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Teachers, and the Teamsters each gave him a 100, while the Christian Coalition gave him a whopping 7.

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Iowa are strange states politically--where Republicans and Democrats often buck national trends in their own parties. Republican George Ryan, Illinois' current governor, for example, positioned himself as a social liberal running against Democrat Glenn Poshard.
