Kevin,

Re: 3dNow, MMX and KNI

It seems to me that MMX didn't do much.
It seems to me that 3DNow doesn't do much.
It seems to me that KNI won't do too much.

It seems like an awfull lot of silicon area is being spent on small incremental gains.

I am sure that hundreds of software firms will support KNI, just like hundreds support MMX.

The only killer app I can see is for something like HDTV decoding.

But we are years away from HDTV being real unfortunately.

Speech recognition works fine even on a 400Mhz K6 but who needs it.
Video conferencing etc is simply limited by the pipe.

If there was truly a general purpose compelling application - we would all know about it. It seems to me that all the MMX variations are solutions looking for a problem.

Regards,

Kash

Kevin - Re: " KNI will only improve things incrementally. Maybe 10-15% on some very KNI-intensive apps--if they ever get written. Big deal."

It will be a big deal.

All the gamers will be giving their 3DYESTERDAY (tm PR Engel) PCs to their little brothers and sisters as they flock to the new Pentium IIIs.

Your Intel stock could get a lot more valuable Kevin.

And you'll love that BIG DEAL.
