soup:
Re your take on the HAL ad. If, as you indicate, fear about Y2K is the prevailing emotion why do you believe the HAL ad will have much impact? It appears, at least from what I am reading and hearing, most of the Y2K doomsayers are convinced the end is near and there is little Mac, Wintel, or anyone else can do to avert the coming calamity. Thoughts about replacing their individual computer with a Mac just isn't a part of their equation. After all the "power grid" going out will make all computers worthless, don't you know.

Re the "emereging nations" and the impact of Y2K. Our small, but very intellectual coffee klatch, could not decide if the emerging or developing nations would be in better or worse condition if Y2K is real. Having fewer installed networks, databases, electronic commerce etc means having fewer things to fix.

And after all you could simply ask the IOC for the bribe in cash instead of an electronic transfer to a Swiss account.

And finally I have ccome to believe that the only people staying awake at night re Y2K are the Plaintiff's attorneys celebrating their unbelievable good fortune to be first handed the opportunity to "skin" the USA with tobacco law suits and now being rewarded for their good works by being handed a lifetime employment contract dressed up as a computer problem. Will wonders never cease.
