That is mere speculation. The Ames footprint is much smaller than the Caldor footprint and Ames has its hands full with the Hills acquisition. No one at Ames (that I know) has the experience to merge so many stores (the Hills guys did but they all left).
I think there are less direct competitors in the north corridor and not more. Caldor was Bradlees major competitor when it came to hardline (IMHO) Bradlees was better in softline. Target and Kohls are after a wealthier client. Bradlees is after a lower income client.
Bradlees, I hope will start to trade tomorrow with the ticker symbol of BRAD.
