>>Drive trays

Dave, looks good. The bargainmaster strikes again!

With all this time spent slipping us high-quality shopping
tips (and I've just done a bit myself, you know, so I KNOW
how long it takes), how's the old dissertation coming?<GG>
Makes me wish I were back in grad school. All that
time ... all that extra cash ...

Promising removable drive tray solution

Thanks for the Antec removable tray find.

I saw quite a few removable harddrive trays at the Pomona computer show. They started around $13 and none were higher than $20 +/-.

I almost went for a couple but had second thoughts. I figured it would be better to find an online source. I want to swap drives between machines. My guess is that I will need to have trays from the same manufacturer for compatibility reasons. If I want to add to the collection I want to be able to add the same item.

My second consideration is cooling. One of the boxes indicated the tray was rated for a 5400 RPM drive. I assume they are referring to heat considerations. The system is enclosed and it looks to me that heat would build up. Several units had small fans on the back or at least a way to mount a fan on the back.

The price is right on the Antec tray but they do not have a fan. There are cooling vents on the top of the tray ...do you think it is adequate?

Removable Harddrive trays CRU Dataport..and.. <gg>.

I pulled the trigger on a couple (at least...see below<g>) removable harddrive trays.

I wanted a cooling fan just to keep myself from worrying about my drives. I passed on the cyberguys.com trays in favor of a more substantial line...and substantially more cost. I think it was about $20 at Cyberguys for a plastic frame and tray and a sleeve (I think) bearing fan.

CRU (Connector Resources Unlimited) cruinc.com has a rather extensive line (Dataport) of removable harddrive trays.

A good overview of the products recoverdata.com

An almost complete list of part numbers. Essential if one wants to get the right part. rh-data.com

I opted for the Dataport V series. dgesolutions.com
Metal frame and metal cartridge..bettering cooling due to heat transfer through aluminum. The V series has an open cartridge option for some other drives (Jaz, Zip, Syquest, tape?? LS120??) I have no plans for these options at the moment but will consider.

Best price I found was at Onsale..$60.23 for metal frame and metal cartridge part no 9270-241-03.

This one is good for a chuckle. I placed the order for two trays. The server seemed to lock up so I hit the back button. I was sure I had not placed an order because I had not yet given my card number. I reloaded and about two minutes later the order went through. Just to be sure I checked my email and I had three order confirmations!!! One confirmation for the first try and two confirmations for the second order! I immediately emailed them with the situation and asked them to ship me one order for a total of two trays. The automated response indicated customer service was a high priority. It indicated they would get back to me in 24 hrs with either email or a telephone call. Well that did not happen. I am still waiting. (Onsale had my credit card info from my last visit. When I logged on and placed the order they already had the card number...too easy IMO.)

BTW I received some promising email from buy.com today. They indicated an RMA with details and a FEDEX return package was on the way.

Dataport at Onsale onsale.com
(put dataport in search)

Megahaus megahaus.com has the line. (pick Dataport off the sidebar menu under Web Store) They charge $99 for the same thing Onsale has for $60.23. (Onsale charged me a $5 transaction fee and a $3.75 payment processing fee for the two frames) Megahaus is the only place I found that carries the cover plate that is used if the drive is left out of the bay.

Insight insight.com has the Dataport line. They are the only place I found that has the Dataport V cartridge for the ZIP, JAZ and Syquest. (Put Dataport in search)

Necx necxdirect.necx.com has a small selection and will not sell this tray to California residents.
