While I will gladly defer to your expertise on this, are you sure about the HFC throughput speeds? My understanding was that in a clean plant with, say, one user, speeds of up to 8 mbps were achievable. Noisy plant and additional traffic brings the number down considerably, but for a theoretical maximum, isn't it more than a T1?

Also, today's modems all use the standard 6 Mhz of bandwidth. There's no magic to that number, it's just what the industry is used to. I assume if a modem was designed to use more bandwidth, speeds would increase, right?
