You will be surprised to know that for most software patents obtained there is one or more hackers who are responsible for that patent! I always laugh when software companies (e.g. Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Sun, Microsoft,...,...to small startups) always say "...We obtained n number of patents last year!" What basically they are saying is that "Our highly paid high tech corporate lawyers were managed to take someone's cluge and hacking and present that hacking to the patent office and obtain their stamp of approval!" Software without hackers, is like air without oxygen!

With jini source code in the hands of hackers, you can bet your money on SUNW that the Patent office is going to be extremely busy issuing patents to a lot of high tech comapnies and their respective developers. And this is exactly what Sun is hoping for and betting on to boost its hardware side of business!
