Stovall pumps Cisco:

Cisco Systems Inc. Dow Jones Newswires -- January 28,
1999 Stovall: Stk Gains Enable More Cos To Use Stk As Currency

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The sharp gains in some share prices are making it easier for companies to use stock as acquisition currency, said Stovall/Twenty-First Advisers' President Robert Stovall.

"If stock prices weren't as high as they are, particularly in the technology sector, you wouldn't sees companies making acquisitions using their own shares as currency," Stovall told CNBC Thursday.
The accounting of acquisitions may also be masking problems in a company's balance sheet.
"They are using their stock, in part to make acquisitions, to focus the attention of investors and the competition on increasing the top-line of their sales. And they can explain away disappointments in the bottom-line for a while as they make write-offs," Stovall explained.

Stovall recommends investing in blue-chips that pay up for their earnings. Stovall likes Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO), 3Com Corp. (COMS), Intel Corp. (INTC), Dell Computer Corp. (DELL) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT).
"Don't bottom fish," Stovall added.

Gary,

Cisco purchased Diaz, then after Netspeed won the USWest contract they purchased Netspeed. GTE-ILEC has selected Fujitsu/Orctf, GTE-CLEC is using Westell and GTE-Government systems is using Westell. Which GTE division is using Cisco for xDSL? I must have missed that news release.

What is CSCOs xDSL solution for the Digital Loop Carrier? USWest needs this solution. Can Cisco provide an xDSL solution on those SLC-5 and SLC-2000 boxes? I would consider Alcatel as the big ADSL winner "SBC, PacTel, BEL, Bellsouth, Bell Canada, etc" and Pairgain as the HDSL winner.

Do you understand the forward pricing issues on this equipment being sold to the RBOC's? We are talking about $300/line, which includes the ATU-R and ATU-C "DSLAM" equipment. The vendors that produce the silicon and build the end-to-end systems will succeed. Before declaring that Cisco owns his space, take a good look at Alcatel...... until later.
