That is flattering <g>. But seriously, you can watch the ticker youself. When more people buy long, the spread immediately became as small as 1/16. But after it went to an intraday high, I bet a lot of people wanted to sell or short, the spread immediately became larger.

<<One other thing I noticed was the the tick stayed low or negative most of the day again. >>

I think a lot of people discussed this either on this thread or Big K thread a couple of weeks ago. They seem pretty convincing. Maybe you can look back.

Monty: YZ, I initially asked LG the question and so far I vote on your answer.

Thanks...sorry my answer was not good enough...<g> Obviously when the spread expands, it hurts traders on both sides, unless it is only expanded when the price moves in only one direction. (The undesired direction.)

My guess it can be used to influence the price to go in a particular direction or to see which side bites to get a price moving and the stock trading volume up. (And of course to make more money for the S/MMs.)

Any Market Makers out their with the "real" answer?

Where is rrman when you need him...

Monty: <the the tick stayed low or negative most of the day again. Don't know how much that means but just looks strange to me that it is so low (like +60 or even negative) with the market going up strongly at times>

This means that even on a very up day, like today, there were just about as many trades to the downside as the upside, BUT the ones to the upside were much, much more to the upside. The A/D on the NYSE was only about even today (1552/1422), not real good breadth for a very high point up day.
