Alpha partner Samsung is now selling fast processors for as little as $250

Didn't Elmer say a few months ago that Alpha systems will never be able to compete with Intel because of their $100,000 price tag? I remember very clearly having that discussion with him.

<Alpha partner Samsung is now selling fast processors for as little as $250, it has emerged.

According to confidential documents seen by The Register, .25 micron 533MHz Alphas will ramp to high volume in spring. They currently cost $250/1000.>

I'll believe it when I see it. Since this news is from the ever-reliable Register, I'll take it with a big grain of salt. "Confidential documents" indeed.

Besides, which Alpha was The Register talking about anyway? 21164? 21264?

Yougang - Re: "Cheap Alphas & Hopefully, the squeeze on all front of Intel's MPU line shall stablize all players' ASP across board."

Suppose Compaq makes a big push with $250/533 Mhz Alphas.

With Intel selling Compaq tons of Pentium IIs and XEONS and soon Pentium IIIs, and Merced sampling (according to the YUK Register) in June), what does Compaq - or any other computer manufacturer do with an UNPROVEN K7 from AMD ?

Your doomsday scenario for Intel is actually a death warrant for AMD's K7.
