I disagree... Any company that historically has NEVER laid people off, no matter how well managed, will invariably have some "fat". It's just the way things work. If your company policy makes it very difficult to get rid of marginal performers (and ALL companies have at least some), how can you not have some fat? Also, as market conditions change, some groups that were a good idea previously aren't such a good idea today. It's sad, but true, that laying people off can be a good thing for a company. Even in software. Especially if the cuts aren't too deep (and 6% isn't that deep). My concern is the drop in morale that can accompany a round of layoffs.

Just my opinion, tough as it may seem.
