JPH.. Technical buy signals: Let me answer you slowly
MCRE.<<< So if an earnings-play stock is on a watch list
for the day before report is due, then you are saying
that there was no anticipatory upswing.>>>

No quite the contrary. I'm saying its showing a possible and imminent change of trend to positive. 2) I'm saying that MCRE was a 'alternative' earnings play and sometimes an alternate will 'scream' to be put in front becasue of a promising technical picture. But there is no guarantee that even a breakout is a true breakout. If I mastered that completely then move over Warren Buffet.

<<So in this
case it would be ok to grab on day before or on report
day since your research shows it would be positive.>>

Again "no"
My research does not "show it would be positive'.. My research indicates that the probability is that because of the potential higher EPS (over 30%) from same quarter last year that it is expected to move the stock. And you don't "grab" anything without a technically triggered buy signal.

And if it is on watch list but far from report day
you are looking for anticipatory upswing and therefore,
buy and hold till before or if it rose enough, take the
extra risk to sell on report day, but not hold through.

That's 3 out of 3.. again "NO"
if it is far from report day its POTENTIALLY going to be an immediate trade only because when I do the research the technical outlook of the stock is positive.. That is why stocks like CEFT, JVLN, GNSSF,CTGI, COGIF, VSIO were "HITS" about 1 week - 10 days before earnings and when the newsletter is fresh.. While others like some of the airlines can lag and one day just pop. Usually these quick riser play out after 4-5 days and actually retreat.
Please Check the price patterns of CEFT for an example.

but if i am deciphering your post correctly I would sell on report day if I've gotten a good profit 10%+ and stock has run up into overbought territory. (again technical signals come into play).. The only problem I have with your post is that nowhere do I find the words "techically sound or triggering technical buy signals" You can't ignore that. In fact its the technical signals that determine entry.. and the interplay with the fundamental and technicals work very well together for a complete whole. But you can't have one without the other.
