Spots/Clarence, [DOS cmd syntax]

Not sure when or where, but sometime between DOS6 when a dos command of "help" brought up a menu of commands and other topics, and Win98 where that don't happen, MS moved the syntax internal to the command. I.e. "format /?" in the dos window will yield an impressively obtuse description of the operations of the format command. <g>

Happy Dos-ing,
Paul

Or anybody have another recommendation for CD-R. I'm looking for internal, 4x write (got 2x already), and SCSI. Or faster write

I have my eye on the Plextor 8X write drive. The retail version looks to have a nice software package. My 2X drive is really slow. plextor.com

The 8X has a 4 meg buffer. Also laser calibration. This may be a common feature. My old Pinnacle Micro drive calibrates before it starts a burn.

I am beginning to think the problem with my current CDR situation is the drive. I finally had two burn successes in a row. The only thing I changed was the media. The burn using the Mylex controller in lieu of the Adaptec gave me a more descript SCSI error message..included the words.. medium error

If the machine can calibrate to the media perhaps it will have a more universal application.

NECX necxdirect.necx.com has the drive for $469 retail ( includes the restore software.. I am interested in the possibility of using the drive in lieu of or in addition to Drive Image)

Some promotional literature from the NECX site

Plextor has taken CD burning to the next level with the PlexWriter 8/20.
It writes at an industry-leading 8X and reads between 12X and 20X,
depending on whether it's reading data from the inside or the outside of
the disc. These industry-topping write and read speeds mean that not
only can you record CDs faster than ever before, but you can also use
the PlexWriter to replace your current CD-ROM drive.

The PlexWriter 8/20's Fast SCSI burst transfer rates, low CPU
utilization, huge 4MB buffer, internal cooling, vibration dampening, and
synchronous data transfer all add up to more reliable CD writing for
you. Once you insert a blank CD-R disc, the drive automatically adjusts
to provide the optimum laser power and length of burn for that particular
disc. Successful recording sessions could not be more effortless.

Compatible with Windows 95, NT, and Mac OS, the PlexWriter offers
the versatility you need to be sure the drive is functional for years to
come. It also reads all recordable formats, including CD-R, CD-RW,
and CD-UDF packet writing standards. With the included CD
SneakerNet software, the PlexWriter 8/20 allows you to simply drag
and drop files to the drive as well as add files to the same disc later. It
is also capable of Digital Audio Extraction at high speed.

The PlexWriter 8/20 also comes with Plextor's CD Res-Q hard drive
disaster recovery software. This package allows you to record a copy
of your hard drive, including your operating system, program files, and
data to CD-R disc. Then if your hard drive ever fails, you can use nearly
any CD-ROM drive to boot from your backup disc and restore your data
and your programs with their original configuration.

The Plextor PlexWriter is the perfect storage solution for large files,
such as video, graphics, desktop publishing and multimedia
applications, as well as CD duplication and file sharing. And for just
pennies per megabyte, CD recording is the most cost effective storage
medium available. The PlexWriter 8/20 is a high-performance,
dependable CD-Recorder that won't let you down whether you are
using it to create marketing materials in the office or to make your own
music CDs at home.

Spots,

I love my Yamaha 4420.

the 4416 is even better. 8X drives are tempting but require more expensive media.

You can get the Yamaha 4416 bare for ~$350
