Loki:

It is important to remember that CPQ's rate of growth, and absolute increase in sales, is measured against the 4th quarter '97 when the channels were stuffed. In other words, the current performance, as stated, is very good, but would have appeared statistically even better if the comparison had not been with exaggerated numbers from last year but with the lower truer numbers from last year.

per your request re dell runup...stock price reflects the following:

computer sales up 40%...intc beat estimates, msft blew estimates away...both these are in over 90% of computers...both announced split. ibm beat estimates (though hardware sales were off) ibm announced split. lowly gateway beat estimates (they re-tooled to match dell distribution)...stock up 14 (or so) last week. cpq beat estimates (barely) but can't split only due to price...cpq also replicated dell distribution model. guess the market is saying if the above took place why shouldn't dell blow away expectations. they did $0.28 or $0.29 last quarter & consensus estimate is for $0.31 on 2-16 earnings release...whisper # i saw friday was $0.32. IF computer sales are up 40% AND intc /msft are in 90% computers AND dell competitors beat expectations THEN, shouldn't decent quarter be brewing for dell. consensus stock price estimate i pick up on several threads is $118 by 2-16 announcement. even at $100 history dictates a split---buy dell...hope this helps. incidentally i may rotate some $ back to cpq after dell split run-up...assuming that happens fwiw
