Please explain for technologically obtuse. At Home to install for me Feb 19. what is winproxy, wingate, deerfield and why do need a server or a peer to peer network (network with whom?)

OH MY This is probably a stupid question but here goes:
If I get cable and a cable modem do I not need any phone or phone line? So if the Yr 2000 wipes out phones for a while I will still be able to use my computer???? Will I still be able to use AOL as my service provider?
