Nothing earth-shattering in Advanced Fibre Communications' (AFCI) Jan. 26 earnings report, but when you're a company still recovering from a near-death experience, dull is good. Fourth-quarter sales were below the same period a year earlier, but they climbed 12% from the third quarter -- the first meaningful sequential increase since the fourth quarter of 1997. At 8 cents a share, earnings beat analyst estimates by 3 cents. I think Advanced Fibre Communications continues to make a comeback (although I'd sure like the company to find a great, permanent CEO). I'm upping my October 1999 price target on the stock to $18 a share from the current $15 target.

Careful with rec CIEN....

They are apparently still losing contracts to competitors.

Notice how the stock spikes lately, then retreats? Probably has more to do with takeover rumours than improving financials or business at the moment.
