"Four and twenty blackbirds baked in a pie" My guess the pie has 24 blackbirds in it. As a child, we were instructed to write 101 as "one hundred one", but to say "one hundred and one" because it's easier to misunderstand aural communication, probably because you can re-read at your own speed but must ask the speaker to repeat themselves. This can get tedious when Joe GarbleGab gets liquored up. PW. P.S. I'm confused when the Bible says "twenty and four thousand." Does this mean 4,020 or 24,000?
