Terrence, although we are all animals, we are more. Rather we have the potential to be more than merely animals. Unfortunately, it seems that too many of us surrender that potential. Even slavishly hewing to a belief system can be distinctly animal-like, reminiscent of a well-trained dog. No matter how devoutly one believes in a religion or a political credo, it is necessary to question it continually and to be aware that one may be wildly mistaken. This recognition alone should foster thoughtful tolerance among people. (Hey, among some of my best friends are misguided liberal Democrats, ultraconservative Republicans, and Jehovah's Witnesses.) Respect, tolerance, and understanding are what make growth possible. Who knows, maybe being an early Libertarian was misguided. (Nah!)
